Dynasty An Opportunity For Academy To Graduate

Trainer Mark Newnham didn’t want to throw unbeaten three-year-old Academy into the deep end too quickly so is pleased he’s struck a race at Rosehill on Saturday where essentially the entire field is dipping its toes in deeper water. The race in question is the Group 3 $160,000 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m), a race where no horse has had more than five starts and only one of the 11 acceptors is a maiden. Academy, with wins at Warwick Farm and Kembla Grange, is a horse Newnham has a high opinion of but he also said that’s unlikely to change if he is defeated for the first time. “It’s a funny sort of race because they are all sitting at a similar level, they all look promising but we’ll know whi

Samadoubt shocks rivals with record-breaking win in Winx Stakes

Samadoubt – a Group 1 weight-for-age winner. This wasn’t a sentence I thought I’d ever need to write out but Samadoubt shocked some of the biggest names in Australian racing with an upset win in the $500,000 Winx Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday. But the more you analyse the result, it is apparent Samadoubt deserved his win. Samadoubt, the $31 outsider, went straight to the front, set a solid tempo and ran his rivals ragged. His rivals had every chance to run Samadoubt down in the straight but he was too tough, too good. Samadoubt ran the Randwick 1400m in a brilliant 1m 21.05s – a new race record. He has won the race in faster time than legendary champions and three-time winners

No doubt a tough task

Six-year-old gelding, Samadoubt has earned himself a special kind of respect from trainer Bjorn Baker, and rightly so. In his last preparation, he pulled off the best race campaign of his career - 4 wins from 9 starts, including his first black-type title in the Canberra Cup. The gelding returned to training at the Warwick Farm stable in June following a well-deserved spell. Since then he has had one public barrier trial at Rosehill on the 6th August where he cruised in the lead to win the Group & Listed heat by an impressive 6.3 length margin. The stable then gave Samadoubt a dash-up on the course proper at Canterbury as his final solid hit-out before picking out a race. Initially, Bjorn Ba

Model of consistency takes flight for Vandyke

Constant Flight was ultra-impressive scoring a three-length victory at Doomben on Wednesday. The five-year-old gelding is the model of consistency with the recent win taking his current strike rate to 50% - 5 wins from 10 career starts. Despite an exemplary race record, the Vandyke stable would be the first to admit that Constant Flight has not been the easiest horse to train, however, the patience of the stable and connections was well rewarded with a fourth metropolitan grade win. Jockey Ryan Maloney returned to scale with nothing but praise for Constant Flight, who ran his last 600m of the race in 33.49s, after travelling beautifully in the lead for the entire journey. “I felt that he had
