SETSUNA oh so close in the Gimcrack Stakes

The day after She Will Reign brilliantly won the Group 1 Moir Stakes, we were back at Randwick to unveil some of our babies, 3 in fact in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes.

It's so exciting to see the babies step out for the first time with many dreams and hopes placed on the line. Darby Racing is so proud to have qualified 3 fillies for the prestigious event including, for Golden Slipper winning trainer Gary Portelli, Now Or Never (by All American) and I Stole Your Love (by Unencumbered) however it was the daughter of Choisir - SETSUNA that almost pulled off the upset for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.

Unwanted in the market at $26, from the moment we selected this filly we believed she would be our Gimcrack Stakes filly and she didn't disappoint. Setsuna improved greatly from her trial by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott looked all over the winner down the straight before being collared on the line by Satin Slipper.

Jockey Brenton Avdulla was full of praise the fillies effort and believed had the leaders taken her further into the race, she may have held on to win as she was left in front a long way from home.

It was a fantastic way to kick off the 2YO racing season with all 3 Darby Fillies, running very well - Setsuna 2nd beaten 0.2 of a length, Now or Never, looks one for the future making ground late to run 4th, beaten only 2 lengths and I Stole Your Love, probably has the most improvement to come, finishing 13th but only beaten 4.5 lengths.

Both Now Or Never and I Stole Your Love head to the paddock to continue their development whilst Setsuna looks to head to Melbourne in search of further success over the spring.

Congratulations to all owners and a great start to these fillies careers!

If Saturday is anything to go by, we look set for another season with our 2YO's!
