Morpheus wins Gooree Cup at Mudgee for Cameron Crockett

A feature win at the track he learned his trade with a horse quickly putting together and exciting record.

Sunday's Gooree Cup was a good one for Cameron Crockett.

Crockett, a leading Mudgee trainer before making the move to Scone in 2018, was delighted to see Morpheus take out the feature not only due to the his potential, but because it hasn't always been an easy path with the lightly-raced five-year-old gelding.

"He's good," Crockett told Sky Thoroughbred Central after taking out the $22,000, 1400m event.

"He's a pretty good horse but he's not without his problems.

"He turned up to us average and it's taken a long time to get him right and I don't too much with these horse for good reason, and that's why."

Crockett was originally thinking of taking Morpheus to a Highway event in the city on Saturday but after having some anti-inflammatories after running third at Newcastle last time out it was cutting it too fine.

Crockett might have been disappointed not to test Morpheus in Saturday's $75,000 Highway event at Rosehill but the Gooree Cup was a welcome consolation.

Punters were proved right after backing Morpheus in to a $2.80 favourite and after sitting midfield for much of the trip jockey Brodie Loy was able to move forward around the outside and take the lead from Oneness ($3.70) shortly after entering the straight.

He was able to fight on and maintain that lead over the final few 200m and won by half-a-length from the fast-finishing Caszar ($19) while the Kody Nestor-trained Fast Talking ($4.40) was third in what was likely a step towards next month's $100,000 Dubbo Gold Cup.

Morpheus will soon get his chance in a Highway event, with Crockett eyeing a city run midway through next month should his gelding pull up well after Sunday's cup win.

Next year's Country Championships is also an option for the Scone-based trainer with Morpheus now boasting three wins from 16 career starts.

The cup victory was part of a winning double for Crockett on Sunday as he also won with Entreat.
