Adam Hyeronimus bounces back winning on SELITA then stood down with suspected broken collarbone

ADAM Hyeronimus bounced back from his opening-race fall with a determined ride to win on Selita at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday — then was stood down by the club doctor soon afterwards with a suspected broken collarbone.

Hyeronimus followed his win on Selita by riding Caped Crusader in the next race and later complained of shoulder and elbow soreness.

He was forced to relinquish his final two rides of the day and went to hospital for X-rays to determine the extent of his injuries.

Hyeronimus had ridden in four races after his fall from Northern Fire, winning on Selita and finishing runner-up on Lucky Fish, but it wasn’t until after he rode Caped Crusader that he feared something was wrong.

“I was riding Caped Crusader out with the whip when I felt some pain,’’ Hyeronimus said.

But the jockey was certainly not affected by any injury problem when he rode Selita to win the Rydges Parramatta Handicap (1300m).

Selita was momentarily held up for a run at the top of the straight but Hyeronimus pushed the mare into the clear and she finished strongly.

Hyeronimus has combined with Selita for a hat-trick of wins, graduating from provincial class to metropolitan midweek then Sydney Saturday, which is no mean feat.

“I think she can keep improving and in the right race I feel she can get some black type,’’ Hyeronimus said.

“She’s a nice mare. We had to wait for a run for a few strides but she kept driving up there, she wanted to go into that gap.’’

Once Selita ($6.50) got between runners, she wore down gallant frontrunner Bonete ($10) to win by a short-neck with favourite Miss Royale ($1.85) having every chance before finishing a long-neck away third.

Selita gave trainer Bjorn Baker his 50th winner of the season, maintaining his second placing behind Chris Waller in the NSW trainers’ premiership.

“Adam said after her last win at Canterbury that he thought this mare might be up to stakes level and she is going the right way,’’ Baker said.

“But we will look for another suitable, take her through the grades.’’
