Can Samadoubt repeat his Winx Stakes heroics?
Trainer Bjorn Baker sees no reason why Samadoubt can’t emulate his Group I heroics in Saturday’s Group II Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.
Samadoubt completed one of the biggest upsets in recent Group I history last month when the son of Not A Single Doubt led all the way to claim the Winx Stakes at $31 odds.
Punters won’t get anywhere near those odds in the Chelmsford Stakes, where Samadoubt is an $8.50 chance with TAB.com.au.
He will meet several of the conquered brigade from the Winx Stakes in this week's weight-for-age contest including favourite Avilius ($2) and Group I winner Unforgotten ($8).
When questioned if he thought Samadoubt could repeat his Winx display on the weekend Baker said, “Why not?”
“You have to be in it to win.
“There was probably a lot of reasons why he couldn’t do it first-up and he put a lot of them to bed so he is a high class horse on his day.
“He probably had residual fitness from the Canberra Cup but there is no form like winning form.”
Samadoubt has continued to tick all the rights boxes for Baker since his shock first-up performance.
“He’s in great order and has done everything well,” Baker said. “Barrier 16 is probably not a bad gate because he is going to roll forward on his own time.
“His work has been really good since his Group I win. He looks a million dollars and (jockey) Tim Clark stays with him.”
