It was a brave and brilliant performance at Rosehill today from the lightly raced 5YO gelding Thebudgiesmugla, who toughed it out in fine style to claim victory in the Chandon Handicap (2400m).

Ridden to absolute perfection by the in-form Dylan Gibbons, Thebudgiesmugla enjoyed the run of the race, settling beautifully in the one-out, one-back position. As the pressure went on approaching the 800m, Gibbons was forced to make his move earlier than planned, but the big-striding gelding rose to the occasion. Digging deep over the final furlong, he showed true grit to fend off all challengers and score by a determined neck on the line.
Another astute Darby Racing purchase, Thebudgiesmugla was secured for just $100,000 through Dave Mee Bloodstock and has quickly proven himself a shrewd buy.

Trained to the minute by Bjorn Baker, this emerging stayer has now had just three starts in Australia for two wins and a second, signalling that Cups races may well be in his sights as he continues his climb through the grades.
A huge congratulations to all the winning owners — Thebudgiesmugla looks to have a bright staying future ahead!
