16-length winner earns shot at Sandown Cup

Mind-boggling 16-length last start winner True Marvel will step out in Saturday’s Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) at Caulfield.

While Warwick Farm trainer Matthew Smith is under no illusions True Marvel needs conditions to suit – weather and distance – The Valley romp has prompted thoughts to raise the bar slightly.

True Marvel walloped a field of jumpers basically in the Jericho Cup Qualifier last Friday week but as a French-bred cannot proceed towards the 4600m Jericho Cup on Sunday at Warrnambool.

“You don‘t get one that does very often (winning by 16 lengths),” Smith said.

“He‘s pulled up well and hopefully we’ll have a crack at the Sandown Cup, different kettle of fish when you’re up against good flat horses instead of jumpers.”

Damien Thornton, who piloted True Marvel to recent victories at The Valley and Mornington, will ride the six-year-old gelding on Saturday.

True Marvel will be tipped out for a break after Saturday’s race, with Smith to aim up in the autumn.

“He’s one of those horses, if he gets the right conditions, a wet track, two mile, he’s going to be in it, but on top of the ground he’s just not as effective,” Smith said.

“I’m sure he’d run well in two mile handicaps if the track was wet and especially on heavy tracks, you just have to have an open mind with him, if those races present you have a crack at them.”

Smith will saddle up Sweet Thomas in the Sandown Cup also.
